The Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr. Fintan Warfield has today welcomed the support that councillors in South Dublin expressed for his motion calling for the return of the Manchester Martyrs to Ireland.

Mayor Warfield said;

“2017 will mark the 150th anniversary of the execution of William Phillip Allen, Michael Larkin and Michael O’Brien.

There is an onus on government and local councils to work together with long-time campaigners, the British government and the council in Manchester to ensure the burial of the Manchester Martyrs in Glasnevin Cemetery prior to their 150th anniversary, where an unoccupied grave awaits.

The execution of Allen, Larkin and O’Brien in Manchester ensured their martyrdom but the words ‘God save Ireland’ in a speech from the dock ensured their status as heroes.

For my part, I look forward to using the mandate expressed in the South Dublin chamber to engage with the appropriate authorities in an effort to return the remains of the Manchester Martyrs to Ireland”.
