Newly appointed Sinn Féin representative for the Templeogue-Terenure local electoral area has said Fianna Fáil are being opportunistic in opposing the abolition of the Seanad.
Speaking after the launch of Sinn Féin’s campaign in support of the referendum, Fintan Warfield said:
“October 4th is not about reform. It simply isn’t on the table in this referendum. Fianna Fáil had plenty of time to reform the upper house when they were in power but never did. The Seanad is elitist and undemocratic and should be abolished.
“Micheál Martin went into the last general election with a commitment to abolish the Seanad yet he now opposes its abolition.
Sinn Féin seeks to build a New Republic on this island based on equality for all citizens. Fairness, democracy and equality of citizenship demand that the current Seanad be abolished. There can be no place in a real republic, based on equality, for an elected office to which only a tiny percentage of the population have the right to vote.
