Sinn Féin Seanad spokesperson for the Arts Senator Fintan Warfield has described the Budget 2018 measures relating to the arts and culture ‘meagre’ and ‘unambitious’.

Senator Warfield said:

“Despite promises made from by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar that the government would double funding for the arts over seven years, the cultural budget for 2018 received a paltry 6% increase.  The same budget was decimated by Fine Gael at the helm of the last government and now is the time to start returning effective investment that stands up for artists and audiences alike.

“However, rather than real investment and returning actual cultural infrastructure to the communities, the government have decided to spend on ‘window dressing’ the sector. Bodies like the Arts Council and the Irish Film Board are a fiscal necessity for artists and cannot perform to full capacity unless the government give serious consideration to them in future rather than the breadcrumb approach in today’s budget.”
