Mayor of South County Dublin and Sinn Féin Councillor for Templeogue-Terenure, Fintan Warfield, has today called on Government to address the growing gap between the need for supports for people with intellectual disabilities and the resources available to meet them.

“Over the last seven years, disability organisations have faced substantial budget cuts, resulting in a reduction of over 20% of funding to date.

“In Templeogue, Cheeverstown service providers work tirelessly, making every effort to protect essential services with reduced resources and building towards a future which respects the contribution made by all members of our community.

“How long will service providers be asked to deliver quality support under continued reduced resources and breaking point pressure?

“This Budget presents an opportunity for Fine Gael and Labour to address the widening gap between the need and demand for supports for people with intellectual disabilities and their families, and the resources available to meet them.

“Sinn Féin are focussed on presenting a fair, workable alternative to the austerity policies of Fine Gael and the broken promises of Labour.

“The substantial increases in residential service waiting lists, respite and other services can only be dealt with by additional investment.”
